{"id":2024,"date":"2014-05-15T10:38:39","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T10:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chelifer.com\/?page_id=2024"},"modified":"2020-01-22T14:35:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T14:35:57","slug":"littlehampton-west-beach","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.chelifer.com\/?page_id=2024","title":{"rendered":"Littlehampton West Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Littlehampton west beach consists of fringing shingle adjacent to the dunes then fine sand angled at approximately 1.6\u00b0, extending some 280m from the edge of the dunes to mean low water. The mean splash zone below the dunes extends some 15m to the mean spring tide line followed by the mean tidal level 27m in front of the dunes and the neap tide level at 38m. This part of the shore is completely dry most of the time. Below this the sand is compact and wet at low water. Scattered and areas of cobbles and pebbles appear and disappear from season to season. These can support attached algae, shore crabs, shellfish, etc. Areas of the beach can be extensively covered in drift weed torn up from the sublittoral and including mermaid\u2019s tresses, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marlin.ac.uk\/speciesfullreview.php?speciesID=4328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chorda filum<\/a>,<\/em> green algae and a rich variety of red algae. At extremely low water springs these rich \u2018seaweed gardens' become uncovered and support a diverse range of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/AERIAL_littlehamptonW-s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"595\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chelifer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/AERIAL_littlehamptonW-s.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of Littlehampton West Beach with harbour arm.\" class=\"wp-image-2975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chelifer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/AERIAL_littlehamptonW-s.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.chelifer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/AERIAL_littlehamptonW-s-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chelifer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/AERIAL_littlehamptonW-s-429x300.jpg 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Aerial view of Littlehampton West Beach with harbour arm.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close to the harbour arm and a little off-shore, the freshwater from the River Adur has some influence on the species found. Notable on the harbour arm is the dominance of the freshwater tolerant introduced barnacle <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marlin.ac.uk\/speciesinformation.php?speciesID=3252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elminius modestus<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;that came in from New Zealand during WWII. It very successfully competes for space with the acorn barnacle <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marlin.ac.uk\/speciesfullreview.php?speciesID=4328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Semibalanus balanoides<\/a><\/em> that only occurs as isolated individuals on the harbour arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lug worm, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marlin.ac.uk\/speciesfullreview.php?speciesID=2592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arenicola marina<\/a><\/em> and associated fauna including occasional sand mason worms, <em>Lanice conchilega<\/em>, occur in the sand from the mid shore to low water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2015 survey yielded relatively few species associated with the harbour arm, far fewer than previous years. Whether this is significant is not clear as faunal diversity can go up and down over time and the effects of winter\/spring storms etc can severely restrict growth and colonisation early in the year. Very few patches of barnacle spat were evident in 2015 compared to previous years.
